Experiments in Synthetic Psychology

A rather interesting project, FloraJS is setting out to simulate natural systems with JavaScript:

Valentino Braitenberg was an Italian neuroscientist and cyberneticist who wrote a book called, Vehicles: Experiments in Synthetic Psychology. In the book, he describes hypothetical vehicles comprised of motors, sensors and other components. Each vehicle inherits components from the previous until they exhibit identifiable behaviors such as aggression, cowardice and love.

The ongoing project’s objective is to build and animate Braitenberg’s vehicles, the result is a beautiful, enigmatic experience.

The Authors

In addition to their role as lecturers in interactive design at the University of Ulster at Belfast, where they have been active in promoting a web standards-based curriculum, Christopher Murphy and Nicklas Persson are practicing designers and digital artists. Their work has featured in a variety of design books and magazines alongside numerous internationally respected designers and they are regular speakers at design conferences and workshops worldwide.
