Introducing Safari 5

Safari 5 [Detail]

Released just hours ago, Safari 5 - Apple’s browser of choice - sports a number of new, under-the-hood improvements, including: a significantly faster JavaScript engine (now, “3 percent faster than Chrome!”); improved HTML5 support (it now comprehends article, aside, footer, header, hgroup, nav and section); support for geolocation services; and full screen HTML5 video.

Another promising new feature is Safari Extensions, described by Apple as, “a new way for developers to enhance and customize the browsing experience.” Created with web standards, a knowledge of HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript is all that is required to cook up finely crafted marvels like Panic’s Coda Notes, a fantastic showcase of the possibilities Safari Extensions offer. Long a feature of competing browsers, Safari’s entry into the extensions racket makes this an interesting space to watch.

That’s not all… Safari 5 includes plenty of other features too, not least Reader, designed to allow you to cut the clutter from busy web pages (removing your finely wrought designs in the process). What the Safari 5 upgrade didn’t deliver, however, was the option to automatically restore the tabs from your last session. That said, we did at least get Bing!
